UH Center for Soviet Union in the Asia-Pacific Region [SUPAR] and Center for
Russia in Asia [CeRA] was established in 1986 to recognize our past and present
expertise on the subject of Russia in Asia. Directors were
John J. Stephan (1986-88),
Patricia Polansky (1988-92), and
Robert Valliant (1992-2003). The main
work of the Center was the
SUPAR Report (later called the
RA [Russia in Asia]
Report, 1986-1994, 17 nos.), compiled and edited by
Robert Valliant. This came
out twice a year and contained abstracts from the Russian, Japanese and Asian
press on the Soviet Union/Russia Federation's dealings with each country in Asia.
The Center ceased any official activities in 2000; the official date of closure was 2003.
