In May of 1967 John White, Charles Neff, Roland Fuchs, Larissa Keller, Ella Wiswell, and Peter Rossbacher submitted a memo to Deans Todd Furniss and Robert Kamins proposing the establishment of a committee on Russian studies and the creation of an undergraduate certificate in Russian area studies [RAS]. This was approved. Later Russian history professor Don Raleigh and Russian language professor Larry Heien were very active with this committee. The activities ceased in the mid-1980s. Certificates are still awarded.
