Professor of Japanese and Russian history at UH from 1970 to 2001, Stephan's research collection includes:
• a library of approximately 350 titles in English, Russian and Japanese on the history of Northeast Asia, Russo-Chinese and Russo-Japanese relations, the Soviet/Russian Far East, Sakhalin, and the Kuril Islands.
• 1.5 archival record boxes of research materials and 5 cardfile boxes of notecards and bibliography for his book The Russian Far East: A History (Stanford 1994)
