Power Bars/Strips and Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS)

Please DO NOT turn equipment OFF or ON by using the power bar on/off switch. When there is more than one piece of computer equipment plugged into a power bar, each piece of equipment should be turned off separately. And then you may turn off the power bar. When it is time to turn on the equipment, turn on the power bar first, and then turn on each piece of equipment separately. Using a power bar to turn off or turn on several pieces of computer equipment at once can overload the power circuit and cause severe damage as the power to each piece of equipment decreases or increases. Power strips do not need to be unplugged from the wall, but you may do so during power outages if you wish as long as all connected equipment is already turned off.

UPS should not be used to power off/on all equipment at the same time. In addition, if the power is off, the UPS will usually beep - turn it off to stop the beeping and conserve the battery. UPS equipment does not need to be unplugged from the wall, but you may do so during power outages if you wish as long as all connected equipment is already turned off.

If you have any questions about the safe way to turn off or turn on computer equipment, please send email to DNS at: micro@hawaii.edu.
