As a publicly-supported institution, the Libraries welcome groups of non-affiliated persons to use its resources. However, direct instruction will not be provided by Library staff.
Responsibilities of Non-UH-Affiliated Instructors
1. The group leader is expected to provide instruction about using the
library to their groups without direct involvement of UHM Libraries' staff. Information about the Libraries and their services will be provided to the group leader in consultation with the appropriate head of the department or service. Specifically, the group leader isexpected to
a) be able to provide a basic understanding of the role and function ofthe library or its specific collections or services to the group;
b) be able to provide basic skills in performing the activity in which the group will be engaged so as to avoid requiring library staff assistance to the group;
c) have used the resources of the group'sappropriate school, college or public library prior to using the UHM Libraries' resources.
2. The group leader must telephone or email the head of the department or service which
will be visited or used. Go to the main library web page
http://library.manoa.hawaii.edu/ and select the appropriate library department. If unsure of the department or head to contact, telephone 956.2474 or email
uhmlibps@hawaii.edu.
3. Requests must be submitted at least two weeks in advance of the intended date of a visit.
4. The
Library Use and Conduct Policy should be reviewed by the group leader. It can be
found at
http://library.manoa.hawaii.edu/about/policies/library_use-conduct.html. The group must be supervised by the group leader in order to insure that these rules are followed. A group larger than 15 members should be divided into smaller groups for adequate supervision and to minimize disruption to the Libraries' affiliated users.
5. A group may be asked to leave the Libraries if they are disruptive to affiliated users. Upon receiving reports of a disruptive group, the UHM Libraries' Public Services Division Head may deny return visits by the group.
6. A group may use public computers or other resources in accordance with the
UHM Library Public Computer Use Policy, which can be reviewed at
http://library.manoa.hawaii.edu/about/computing/pub_computer_policy.html. However, a group should avoid disturbing the use of public computers or other resources by the Libraries' affiliated users. There is a one-hour limit on computer use by non-affiliated individuals or groups.
