The University of Hawai'i at Manoa Library serves as a key resource for the Manoa campus and for the other UH system campuses as well. Located in Honolulu's Manoa Valley, the Manoa campus is a land, sea and space grant institution with a Fall 2009 full-time enrollment of 14,726 students. It is rated as a Carnegie Research Universities (Very High Research Activity) institution. Doctorates are granted in 51 fields of study. Extramural grants and contracts totalled nearly $300 million in 2007-2008.

As of June 2010, the Library has a staff of 84 FTE library faculty and other professional staff, 70 FTE support staff, and 62 FTE student assistants. The collections contain more than 3.4 million volumes, 2.3 million microform units, about 5,000 computer files, 15,000 linear feet of manuscripts and archives, more than 73,000 audiovisual items, and nearly 95,000 maps and aerial photographs. Approximately 50,000 serial and journal titles are currently received in paper and/or electronic formats. Total expenditures from all sources of funds totaled more than $15,000,000 in 2009-2010. The Library manages its primary business operations using the Ex Libris Voyager integrated library system.

Collections are housed in three buildings on campus: Hamilton Library, Sinclair Library, and Jefferson Hall. Hamilton Library, with a total of 304,265 square feet of space, houses the research collections in the humanities, social sciences, science, and technology, the area focus collections for Asia, Hawaii, and the Pacific; archives, manuscripts, and other special research collections. The 95,000 square foot Sinclair Library is home to the music collection, course reserve reading service, Wong Audiovisual Center, and storage of older journals. Both Hamilton and Sinclair contain a campus computer lab and provide reference, instruction, and other services.

During 2009-2010, the library faculty and staff assisted library users in nearly 64,000 reference transactions, more than 360,000 circulation (borrowing) transactions, and nearly 35,000 interlibrary loan transactions. Through their instructional activities, the Library faculty support the Manoa General Education and other campus requirements for student information literacy. During 2009-2010, the Library faculty guest lectured in more than 500 undergraduate and graduate class sessions involving more than 8,000 students.

The UH Manoa Library maintains memberships in many academic and professional consortia and organizations including the Greater Western Library Alliance (GWLA) and the Association of Research Libraries (ARL). Among the 113 North American university research library members of ARL, UH Manoa Library was ranked 76th on the ARL Library Investment Index, 2006-07.
