For Gregg Geary it's all about the students. As Head of UH Manoa Sinclair Library, he has been responsible for the development, delivery, and administration of innovative services that have opened up Sinclair to a new and growing community of users. By rethinking the physical, intellectual, and administrative organization of a 1950s-era library, Gregg and his team have redesigned Sinclair to address the information, study, and learning needs of 21st-century college students testifying to Gregg's ability to listen to and learn from all members of his library community: patrons, colleagues, and administration. Specifically, he and his team have expanded and integrated information services so that patrons and staff can easily access needed materials. By considering his patrons by asking what students really need. Gregg has physically transformed Sinclair's first floor: reorganizing and refurbishing furniture and equipment, relocating journal shelves, implementing an information concierge, modernizing signage, and thereby creating comfortable, welcoming, convivial Heritage first-floor reading and study areas, and a commons area dedicated to group study. He has worked closely, and patiently, with administration and staff to open Sinclair on a 24/7 basis, and to enable coffee service and allow food. Since these changes have been implemented, UHM students have been pouring into Sinclair to use the expanded computing facilities, wireless Internet access, and comfortable study areas.
Gregg believes in flexibility, to be able to say just try and see if it works. For him, it's all about offering value-added services, working as a team, and making relationships with various people and groups so together they can build a place where students can succeed. We believe Gregg Geary deserves recognition as HLA's Librarian of the Year.
