I. PROGRAM INFORMATION
The Department of Oceanography allows students to specialize in physical,
chemical, geological, or biological ocean sciences. Biological oceanography
is an interdisciplinary field drawing on a broad range of other disciplines
in oceanography and the physical sciences.
Faculty and graduate student research interests include coral reef and
marine fish ecology; oceanic productivity; ecology of midwater animals,
especially cephalopod mollusca; benthic biological oceanography; aquaculture;
and phytoplankton ecology.
The department offers the MS, and PhD degrees in Oceanography
II. COORDINATION OF COLLECTING RESPONSIBILITIES
Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the field of Oceanography, the
program draws heavily on many subject areas such as, zoology, biology,
and engineering. Oceanography also makes use of material housed in the
Hawaiian and Government Documents Collections.
III. GUIDELINES TO MATERIALS COLLECTED OR EXCLUDED
Language:
English is preferred. The collection contains some material
in Western European and Slavic languages. Asian language material is housed
in both the Science and Technology area and the Asia Collection.

Interests of the department are global, but most of
the research is focused on the Pacific basin and tropical regions. The
collection of materials from other areas is generally limited to regional
studies.
Date of Publication:
Current materials are emphasized; gaps are
filled as needed; rare and historical materials may be acquired as gifts.
Types/Formats of Materials Collected:
