I. PROGRAM INFORMATION
As an instructional unit of the College of Natural Sciences, the Zoology
Department provides degree programs that offer a strong foundation and
mastery of the various biological sub-disciplines associated with zoology
and prepare students for careers in research or teaching.
Faculty and graduate student research interests include animal behavior;
comparative physiology and endocrinology; developmental biology; evolutionary
biology; biochemistry, neurobiology; and population and community ecology.
Because Hawaii is an island environment, there is heavy emphasis on the
marine aspects of these fields.
II. COORDINATION OF COLLECTING RESPONSIBILITIES
The discipline of zoology draws heavily from many subjects collected
for the colleges of Natural Sciences, Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources,
and the School of Ocean Earth Sciences and Technology. The newly reorganized
collection at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology will become an important
source of material in the future. Zoology faculty and graduate students
frequent the facility and have ready access to the collection. The research
needs of faculty and graduate students are taken into consideration when
selecting for this collection.
III. GUIDELINES TO MATERIALS COLLECTED OR EXCLUDED

English is preferred. The collection contains some material
in Western European and Slavic languages. Asian language material is housed
in both the Science and Technology area and the Asia Collection.

Geographic:
Interests of the department are global, but most of
the research is focused on the Pacific basin and tropical regions. The
