I. PROGRAM INFORMATION
The Department of Microbiology instructional and research programs emphasize
the following areas: general and applied microbiology; microbial ecology;
microbial physiology, microbial genetics; host-parasite microbiology and
pathogenesis; immunology; animal virology; environmental virology and
microbiology; ultrastructure and cell biology; microbial nitrogen fixation;
medical microbiology and infectious diseases; regulatory mechanisms and
genetics of eukaryotic microorganisms; and marine microbiology. The department
offer the BA, BS, MS, and PhD degrees.
II. COORDINATION OF COLLECTING RESPONSIBILITIES
Due to the interdisciplinary nature of microbiology, students and faculty
make use of several other areas of the collection. Extensive use is made
of the medical, biochemical, and aquatic science literature. Coordination
is necessary with the selectors in medical technology, agronomy and soil
science, agricultural biochemistry, animal sciences, oceanography, and
medicine.
III. GUIDELINES TO MATERIALS COLLECTED OR EXCLUDED
